Sugar Lips

Sugar Lips has pale cream stamanodes (petals) covered with small light pink spots and magenta lines on the labellum (lower petal). The foliage is blue-green. It is from one of Alice Harris's hand-crossed whites seeds. I've decided to plant this one in the ground for further testing.

Edna Tulip

Edna Tulip is an outstanding heavy bloomer. The flowers are uniquely colored: very light yellow with a pink center.

Canna Buds Appear!

WooHoooo! Dawn Pink is going to bloom any minute. Every time I walk among my cannas, I find a new bud. So far, I have spotted them on Cardinal Sinn, Edna Tulip, Orange Punch and Panache. There is a good chance some of these will be open tomorrow.

Hanging Out By The Pool With Richard Wallace

Richard Wallace is a yellow canna with apple green leaves. There are a sprinkling of red dots in the flower's throat. It is a historic canna developed in 1902. It is also a historic canna for me because it was the first canna I brought home in Las Vegas, NV. For a long time, I grew only Richard Wallace and Dawn Pink in large pots next to the swimming pool ladder. Don't be fooled by Richard Wallace's small, brittle rhizomes. He is a vigorous and agressive grower.

This Little Light Of Mine

C. 'Bangkok' is a treat for the eyes: green and white striped foliage, sunny yellow flowers, and red buds. It is short, so this year I am growing it in a pot. The foliage alone is very decorative.

The Many Faces Of Cleopatra

Cleopatra is a chimera. This is a genetic condition that causes the plant to have variable flowers and foliage. Stalks with all green leaves produce yellow flowers with red dots. If the leaves have purple streaks, then the flowers will have more red in them. Look at the buds. Usually the yellow buds produce mostly yellow flowers and the red buds produce mostly red flowers. Every flower can be different, even on the same stalk.

This loose head of reddish buds is a lovely compliment to the dark narrow leaves of Canna 'Australia'. The flowers will be bright red.

This striped leaf canna is new to my yard. It seems very happy in Las Vegas. It's growth could be described as aggressive. I'm really excited about seeing the flowers. The leaves make me think of C. 'Bangkok', but we shall see.

Ermine is a short little canna with light green leaves. This particular canna is a new seedling to my yard. I've got it growing in a large pot in dappled sunlight. I'm really excited to see it ready to bloom so quickly!
