Texas Tulips, Tulipa praecox – 2/19/09

I’m so excited that these tulips came up! I’ve never even tried to grow a tulip before. The bulbs were small and so was my faith, but now look! Texas Tulips are a species variety that naturalizes well in zones 6 – 8a.

It’s been nine days since I posted a photo of the seedlings. It sure seems like they are rocketing skyward. I will pot up the larger ones in a week or so.

Only about half of the canna seeds in this tray have germinated, but never give up easily. Some may take three or four weeks to come up.

The canna seeds I planted last week began showing sprouts. At first, they are white, but turn completely green before their first day is done.

Starting Canna Seeds

Canna seeds require special preparation before planting.
Canna seeds require special preparation before planting.

Canna seeds have an extremely hard outer skin. It is necessary to open a tiny hole in the skin to let in moisture so the seed can begin to germinate. The method that works for me is needle-nosed pliers and coarse sand paper. Other methods include pet nail nippers and grinding wheels.

Sand off just enough of the dark skin to expose a tiny spot of white.

Don’t sand off too much. The seed could be damaged by excess grinding.

Put your seeds in an empty bottle and add about one or two inches of hot (not boiling) water. Using a bottle with a lid prevents irritating spills. After 24 hours of soaking, the seeds are ready to plant.

Taj Mahal took off like crazy this fall. She must have appreciated the cooler temperatures! Thinking back, she was the first to bloom in the
summer as well. These pictures are from December 1, 2008.

Another orange seedling! I like this one very much! The soft orange flowers are about 3 inches across. It seems to be a dwarf with lightly wavy green foliage.

On the day it snowed, I could not stop myself from bringing in some of my canna seedlings. I grouped them up by the sliding glass door and they are starting to bloom! This canna grew from a seed of the dwarf white Ermine. It seems to be a dwarf, also. The foliage looks just like the leaves of Ermine. I love the yellow markings on pink.
